Facebook has released a major update to its platform for both business and individual users, changing the way pages look and feel on the site.

This change gives businesses and individuals alike the opportunity to upload video content to the cover photo section of the page.

This element is perfect for businesses in particular, as it can be used to showcase the companies latest products, app features or a walkthrough of a brick and mortar business!

Facebook Statement

Since its release, Facebook has followed up with an official statement to the public:

“We recently started testing the ability on a desktop to upload a video as the Page cover. Once a cover video has been created, the video will render when people visit the Page.

By making a cover video available, we want to help you create more engaging interaction and drive more rich experience for your audience by letting you spotlight your creative content in one of the most prominent space: your Page cover.

The feature is still in early testing, but we expect to roll it out more widely soon. We appreciate your patience and support while we improve on this feature to bring cover video available to you soon.”

Facebook Cover Video Specifications

Cover photo videos can be 20 to 90 seconds long and need to be a minimum of 820 pixels by 312 pixels to fit the size of the area.

How To Add Video To Facebook

The video uploaded as a cover is much like a GIF as it plays on a constant loop when being viewed. The video is set to play without sound when first viewed but there is a volume slider option on the upper right-hand side of the image when hovered over to increase or decrease the sound.

Adding a video to the Facebook cover photo is very simple:

  1. Go to the business Facebook Page
  2. Click the icon in the top left-hand corner of the cover photo.
  3. Scroll down to ‘Choose From Video’ if there is a current video on the page that matches the size and time specifications. If not, click ‘Upload Video’ to upload a video that meets the specifications.
  4. Select a video from your computer to upload.

As with general videos uploaded on Facebook, a title and video tags can be added. Captions can also be added and advanced features utilised.

When writing a title and adding tags, ensure these are relatable to your business and ensure Search Engine Optimisation is taken into consideration.

Finally, click upload video!

When published to the page, a notification will pop up in the notifications tab and the video can now be viewed.

Let me know how you get on in the comments. I would love to see your videos and hear your thoughts!
